Drug addiction is unfortunately a growing and common problem throughout the United States. Rehab – generally inpatient treatment at a specialized facility designed to treat addicts – is necessary in order to combat physical and psychological dependence. However, rehab doesn’t always have to be all therapy and medication. Some facilities offer holistic treatment methods that focus on balancing your body, mind, and spirit during recovery.
The approaches utilized in rehabilitation programs like The Dunes are a mix of traditional modalities of care, including group and individual therapy, and alternative, or holistic ways to heal, such as meditation, equine therapy, and yoga.
A great many experts (including our own) agree that holistic treatment methods are the way of addiction treatment future. These 4 holistic methods will help you on your path to recovery!
Holistic Treatment Methods For Recovery
1. Exercise Your Mind
The brain is the control center of the body. It is where thoughts turn to action. There are a number of ways to care for the mind that guide our thoughts and subsequent behaviors and overall attitude. Making positive choices on a daily basis can steer the brain away from toxic and negative thoughts that can fuel drug abuse.
Picking up a book is a wonderful alternative to television during the initial recovery process. Exercising your brain muscles can provide strength for future struggles. The part of your brain that tells you getting high and/or drunk is a good idea can be outsmarted with the proper tools and training. Reading is a great step in the right direction.
2. Exercise Your Body
Holistic treatment methods can also take the form of exercise. Physical activity is crucial to the recovery process. Finding a sport or exercise you enjoy will make the act of working out much more appealing. Do you enjoy walking, jogging, or a good swim? What about hiking, or a pick-up game of basketball?
Regular physical activity helps promote health, happiness, and higher likelihood of sustained recovery. Whichever activity you decide on, make sure to include that holistic approach within your routine several times each week.
3. Center Your Soul
Substance abuse takes a toll on the soul. Establishing a connection to your core being is perhaps the most rewarding aspect of the recovery process.
Proper self-care begins with meditation, which you can sum up as quiet time alone. Though you may be resistant to the process, you should know that these feelings are quite common. Begin by adding a mere 10 minutes of meditation to your day, and see how you feel by week’s end. Group meditation is also available to clients more comfortable in a community setting.
4. Integrate You Mind, Body And Soul
Once you have begun catering to each aspect of yourself individually, the integration of the three will come about more naturally.
Remember to be kind to yourself on your new journey. Set aside a period of time each day to check in with yourself. Listen to each part of your being and do what is needed to keep your entire self healthy.
Feeling good – mind, body and soul will soon go from an aspiration to second nature!
