Energy Medicine
Energy medicine is a series of exercises that are powerful, yet easy to practice. Energy medicine includes the best of Eastern healing disciplines and Western science, including such techniques as:
Therapeutic tai chi
Yogic breathing
Acupressure
Craniosacral therapy
Sound vibrational healing
These practices help to heal the body’s whole system while cultivating greater health and vitality.
As clients learn basic self-care practices from energy medicine, they acquire simple tools they can use immediately to balance their daily energy. Such tools help to heal imbalances that cause distress, anxiety and pain. They also reduce the effect of stress.
To enhance these energies, we learn how to breathe in the most optimal way. Then we practice some simple but powerful meditative techniques using acupressure points and hand and finger positions, many of which can be used at any time throughout the day to build a sense of equanimity and peaceful presence.

Physical Fitness
At The Dunes, we believe that physical exercise is a key element to each client’s overall health and recovery progress. Therefore, we set aside time for movement in our Wellness Program.
Any form of exercise can have a sustained positive effect on mood, anxiety, cognition, energy and sleep. The Dunes offers an in house trainer and physical therapist.
EXPRESSIVE ARTS THERAPY
The word reiki means “universal life energy.” Reiki healing involves the transfer of this universal life force in the healer’s palm onto the client, a process that promotes relaxation and healing.
Alcoholism and drug addiction affects the entire person: physically, emotionally and spiritually. When used in conjunction with traditional methods of treatment, reiki can provide a powerful supplement.
Many clients find physical relief through reiki for withdrawal symptoms such as:
Headaches
Insomnia
Tremors
Nausea
Anxiety
Muscle aches and pain
Additionally, reiki also provides emotional and spiritual relief from the overwhelming feelings of guilt, shame and isolation that often accompany addiction.
Acupuncture
An age-old traditional form of Chinese medicine, Acupuncture has been used in the United States since the early 1970’s to treat addiction and other ailments. Specifically, auricular acupuncture, used in the treatment of addiction, targets 2 to 5 points in the ear that are associated with the kidneys, lungs and liver – organs that may be compromised because of drug or alcohol use.
At The Dunes, we use acupuncture to bring clients relief from drug cravings and symptoms of withdrawal, such as nausea, headaches, insomnia and pain. In addition, because acupuncture works with the nervous system, it often provides emotional relief from anxiety and depression.
Yoga Therapy
The practice of yoga enhances vitality, reduces stress and produces natural feelings of pleasure and contentment, all of which are vital for clients striving to experience sustained recovery. At The Dunes, we believe that a quieter mind and healthy body help people more effectively address the underlying emotional issues that fuel addiction.
Yoga therapy programs at The Dunes take place three to four times weekly in our glass-sided atrium, where clients get to look out over the landscaped grounds and pool as they follow the directions of our expert yoga instructors.
Meditation Therapy
Meditation is a technique which helps promote relaxation, mental clarity and an overall sense of calm and optimism. At The Dunes, group meditation is practiced twice weekly in a beautiful and serene environment.
Utilizing visual imagery and various breathing techniques, our clients are encouraged to develop non-judgmental self-awareness, peace and tolerance – traits all helpful in an ongoing recovery.
Ultimately, many clients learn to practice meditation on their own to cope with life’s challenges and to create a new way to tackle not just addiction, but other problems that may increase their relapse risk, such as anxiety and depression.
Mindfulness Group
Mindfulness group sessions are based on the Rogerian theory which states, “Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.”
The focus of mindfulness at The Dunes is on changing maladaptive behaviors and reducing stress by encouraging clients to “stay in the moment” rather than allowing their minds to dwell on the past or worry too much about the future.
Mindfulness, when practiced in a group or alone, helps to alleviate stress and anxiety, among many other benefits.
