New York State Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz announced recently that he is sponsoring a bill (A 8237) that will make it mandatory for government agencies to “solicit and consider public input” before approval for outpatient substance abuse facilities will be granted. He feels that legislation would ensure that the community is given the opportunity to have appropriate input on the establishment of a treatment facility in a particular area.
Senator Diane Savino, D-Staten Island is the senator who will be sponsoring the bill when the next session begins. Senator Savino and Assemblyman Cymbrowitz protested and successfully halted construction of a drug treatment center that was to be opened at 2632 East 21st Street in Brooklyn.
Reasons For Opposing The Drug Rehab Location
When debating outpatient vs inpatient, there are many things to consider. The Assemblyman pointed to several reasons why this location was not appropriate for a drug treatment center:
- It was only one block away from a school
- There are children living in the building where the proposed treatment center would have been located
- There were not enough parking spaces for buses for transporting patients to and from the treatment center
The final decision about whether to approve the location for a particular facility is left to local agencies. In the case of New York City, the Department of Health determines whether approval will be granted or denied to a particular location.
Outpatient vs Inpatient Treatment For Drug Addiction
