Rampant Opiates, Drug Abuse Stretch From New York City, To Long Island, And The Hamptons

Rampant Opiates, Drug Abuse Stretch From New York City To Long Island, Hamptons | Drug Abuse in New York | The Dunes East Hampton“Drug Abuse Epidemic” It’s a term we’ve heard touted by the media time and again, but it may be closer to reality than you think. Overdoses and deaths from drug abuse in New York are climbing at an incredibly alarming rate and traveling to new neighborhoods each day. To truly understand the magnitude of this information, however, one must see the big picture.

Drugs In America

Everyone knows that a portion of US citizens abuse illicit and prescription drugs, but most people don’t realize just how big this measurement is. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration or SAMHSA, surveys citizens from across the nation to gather information on their past and present habits. In 2008, the organization completed its annual census (National Survey on Drug Use and Health) and found that an estimated 8.3 percent of Americans had used an illicit drug in the past month.

That may seem like a small number, but it actually accounts for millions of people. And, much to the dismay of the general population, the figure is growing. National Survey on Drug Use and Health data from 2013 shows that the number rose to 9.4 percent – or 24.6 million individuals.

To get an idea of this scale, compare it to other epidemics. HIV and AIDS are considered rampant, but only 0.9 percent of adults live with the disease. Drug abuse is more than nine times more widespread than the most notorious sexually transmitted disease.

The Battle Of Drug Abuse In New York

It’s easy to read about statistics that encompass the nation without being too worried. People in places like Nassau County get a feeling of false security because they’re more removed from other portions of the country and assume that the problem won’t actually reach them. You may be surprised to know, however, that even in luxurious areas like the Hamptons, drug abuse in New York is on the rise.

Recent reports revealed that Suffolk is experiencing more deaths from heroin overdoses than any other county. In 2004, there were 32 deaths due to drug overdoses. 2015 revealed just how far the number had expanded. More than tripling the measurement in a little more than a decade, 103 fatalities were recorded. Over the same period of time, Nassau County saw its numbers jump from 24 to 58.

The epicenter of addiction for New York is, of course, New York City. The high population density and areas of poverty make it hard for authorities to keep up with the illegal activity. Although this was once a contained issue, the drugs are leaking down the coast and finding their way into communities and neighborhoods you’d never expect.

While speaking at the East Hampton High School, drug expert Steve Chassman was astonished at the response he received from the attendees. The crowd of 150 plus answered almost entirely the same when asked if they knew someone addicted to drugs or alcohol: Yes. “I’ve been a social worker for 23 years,” Chassman said, “and I’ve never seen it like this.”

A Rise In Deaths And Crime

The number one concern when dealing with drugs is the consequences. Side effects can range from nausea to aggression to breathing difficulties, even when used in small doses. Larger portions and prolonged use expose people to the risk of permanent brain damage, cancer, tooth decay, hallucinations, and more.

Of course, death is the biggest health risk. Using drugs can prove fatal within minutes, especially since the respiratory system and heart are so strongly affected. With fatalities so incredibly common, even non-medical citizens are being taught how to administer Narcan, which is a drug that reverses the effects of an overdose. If not caught in time, however, it’s still likely that the exposure could prove lethal.

Withdrawal can also lead to some particularly nasty symptoms, which means that anyone who’s dependent on the substances will likely do whatever it takes to secure a supply. The insatiable urge for more drugs can lead to all sorts of petty and even violent crimes. When substances begin to migrate, so do the ill effects for the community – and it’s something everyone should be mindful of.

Keeping an eye on the presence of drugs is especially important for families with children. Young, rebellious, and easily influenced teenagers are more likely to experiment with different illegal substances. If you know what’s ahead, you’ll be able to watch for changes in your family, friends, and neighbors. Preparation can help you spot problems before they become too serious and potentially save lives.
