The New Surging Addiction In Wall Street
Once ruled by cocaine and martinis, a recent city health report states that Wall Street elite are now struggling with a surge in painkiller addiction to substances including Percocet, Oxycontin, and Vicodin.
As a result, Mayor Bloomberg has implemented new emergency-room guidelines to help combat and prevent abuse.
“Prescription painkillers can provide life-changing relief for people in dire health situations, but they can be extremely dangerous if used or prescribed improperly,” Bloomberg stated.
Recent data shows rapid growth regarding NYC emergency room visits for opioid-linked conditions – nearly tripling in the past 6 years.
“I am seeing an increase in the need to refer my patients to drug-treatment centers,” psychologist Dr. Alden Cass told the NY Post. “The number of referrals I have made to psychiatrists has probably gone up… 35 perfect to 40 percent in the past year.”
Many blame work-related stress and layoffs for the current predicament.

“Here’s some of what I’ve discovered: The two-martini lunch from the ‘Mad Men’ era has turned into the two- and three- Xanax lunch, or the two- or three- Vicodin lunch,” said Dr. Nicholas Kardaras.
“Many might find it difficult to believe that people who run hedge funds or run multimillion-dollar businesses can be full-blown drug addicts and alcoholics,” Dr. Kardaras continued. “Yet I’ve had clients from these professions.”
