A Holiday Trip That Changed McKinsey’s Life
January 4th, 1984 marks the sobriety date of The Dunes East Hampton treatment center founder Joe McKinsey.
It was New Year’s weekend, and McKinsey, a seasoned salesman, traveled with his wife to Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada; a trip paid for by a wealthy entertainment executive.
As they were gambling, the executive made McKinsey an offer he couldn’t refuse: “I like the way you move… I’d like you to run my record company.”
McKinsey was bowled over and snapped up the $250,000-a-year offer.
An Opportunity Turned Into Disaster Then Into Recovery
Before leaving Vegas, the executive suggested McKinsey treat himself to a complimentary bottle of champagne. McKinsey obliged, ordering the champagne… some vodka, scotch, and a couple bottles of wine…
