Yahoo! Screen: Inside White Collar Prescription Drug Addiction

White Collar Prescription Drug Addiction | Pain Pill Abuse

The Dunes East Hampton’s very own Nicholas Kardaras was recently featured in a video on Yahoo! Screen from CBS News regarding white collar prescription drug addiction.

Many people associate addiction with financial instability, homelessness, and a reckless disregard for bodily health. In reality, addiction extends far beyond the back alleyways and big city slums. These days, many successful, hardworking Americans are combating addiction from the office and home; an escalating issue that shows little sign of slowing.

Candid Story Of Jeff – Real Estate Agent

Jeff, a husband, father, and real estate agent, is experiencing the issue first hand. Following an automobile accident, Jeff was prescribed Hydrocodone and Xanax to help alleviate pain and anxiety during his recovery. Jeff was eager to return to work, and says he leaned too heavily on the prescriptions. These days, Jeff takes double the original amount.

The Dunes’ Dr. Nicholas Kardaras Shares On The Spike Of Prescription Drug Addiction In The Working Force

Dr. Nicholas Kardaras of The Dunes East Hampton says he’s concerned about the country’s escalating pain killer use. In the past 20 years, narcotic prescriptions have nearly tripled.

“Is there a rise in pain, or a rise to our intolerance to pain? Because I can’t in good conscience – as an academic, as a researcher – accept the notion that we have three times more pain over the last 20 years,” Kardaras told CBS News.

In 2010, the percentage of college-educated addicts seeking treatment jumped to a record high of 17.5%. Unfortunately, a large number of addicts still refuse to get help, many of whom feel trapped by financial- and work-related responsibilities.

“When we’re talking about higher functioning and more successful types of addicts, their excuses are more readily built in,” says Dr. Kardaras. “So real or imagined, that becomes the excuse to not get into treatment.”
